Safety is a big issue in the manufacturing industry.

It's not hard to see why.

The industry is full of jobs that require people to work with machines and chemicals, and carry out tasks that could be very hazardous if they weren't done with a lot of care.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has said that on average, 60 workers are injured every day in manufacturing incidents that result in them taking one or more weeks off work (Manufacturing fact sheet 2011-12 on the Commonwealth Government website: Safe Work Australia).

The good news, though, is that workers' compensation claims for serious injuries and illnesses are on the decrease.

Over the last 10 years there has been a reduction of 27% in serious claims.

This is due to several reasons, including stronger laws and regulations, better equipment, safer work practices, and a greater awareness among workers of risks and how to deal with them.

It just shows that when everyone plays their part in making the workplace safer, people are less likely to get hurt.

This unit will look at the main laws and regulations that govern safety in the manufacturing industries, and how this affects the way you need to carry out your work.

In particular it will cover some of the procedures used by manufacturing workers to ensure that they maintain a safe workplace in their day-to-day operations.
